TJX Foundation, the parent company for TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and AJ Wright has committed to another year of support for Nashua area families through a $4,500 grant award to The Youth Council. Last year, we served 16 fathers and 20 mothers (with 72 children) in our Keeping Children Safe through Active Parenting initiative, with 19% of parents under age 21 and 34% under age 25.

In addition, of all families served 62.5% of families reported as white,  31.3% reported as Hispanic, 1 family reported as African American and 1 family reported as Mixed Races.

Active Parenting teaches parents how to raise responsible children and reduce stress, while helping assess the root of their issues. In 2011-12 96% reported improved parenting skills; 82% reduced stress; 93% said the program helped reach family goals.

According to Director of Programs Christina Connor, "We continue to see increases in teen parents and those for whom English is a second language. In addition, a majority of parents attending our classes are court-referred due to concerns of abuse or pending divorce." Connor added, "The remaining 25% are referred through pediatricians and/or community agencies and 10% are self-referred or through word-of-mouth from friends/relatives."

We also collect satisfaction surveys, feedback about the presenter, and overall improvements based on gains the parents have made practicing the information learned at home with their children.

Anecdotally, parents shared:   "I liked the fact that the instructor made me feel like I was not a bad parent and a lot of what I was doing as a parent was right.  That made me more open to learn."

"I think the best part of this class was that the program was open to personal discussion and that we could talk about our own family."

"The support from the teacher and others who took the class was what I liked most about the class.  We are all different but at the same time feel comfortable speaking and learning with each other.  I got a lot of support, especially from the teacher.  I have learned a lot and enjoyed myself along the way."

"This program gave me new ideas and methods to try with my son and clues on where to get more help if I need it."

Thank you again for supporting greater Nashua families! Please consider shopping at TJX companies to help say thank you.
